Kota Marudu - The federal government has agreed to look into overcoming flood woes in the district under the 10th Malaysia Plan, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili said.
Ongkili, who is Kota Marudu Member of Parliament, said a study on the matter had been completed and the report would be forwarded to the Prime Minister's Department for approval.
He added that the proposed flood mitigation project in the district would require up to RM500 million to implement, including straightening and deepening Sungai Bandau and Sungai Kanarom.
Ongkili said the government spent RM30 million a year to repair damages to infrastructure including roads, drains, irrigation system and piping system as well as providing aid to flood victims who suffered losses in the calamity.
"The time has come for us to find the best way to overcome the never-ending flood woes in Kota Marudu.
"The project to straighten rivers is a long-term programme to overcome the problem and this involves several major rivers such as Sungai Bandau and Sungai Kanarom," he said when presenting aid to 603 flood victims.
Ongkili said logging activities at the Crocker Ranger several years ago caused serious soil erosion and compounded the flood problems in the district.
